Humanities top 23 - Choice

Whe full review appeared in the May 2024 issue of CHOICE:

“Masterfully integrating her own captivating story of serving as a surrogate mom at age 40 for close friends, Kao (ethics, Claremont School of Theology) builds a compelling ethical framework for understanding surrogacy. Even though surrogacy is still rare (albeit growing in popularity), it raises complex ethical questions, including the possible exploitation, commodification, and objectification of women’s bodies as well as the ethical status of embryos sometimes created in this type of assisted reproductive technology. Kao draws on feminist and progressive Christian perspectives and also creatively builds on the experiences of some in LGBTQIA+ communities who long for children. Kao’s ethical deliberations always begin with her own experiences and intimate negotiations with the intended parents, which guide her positive vision for surrogacy, according to which the surrogate mom demonstrates “reproductive solidarity and generosity” for the intended parents. Kao’s sensitivity to the pain of infertility commits her to joint decision-making wherein the pregnant mom is central, informed consent and the highest standards of care are maintained, and the principles of social justice are promoted. This is a must-read study for those curious about surrogacy and those interested in thoughtful, systematic deliberations about a complex ethical issue.”
