About the writing Process
We contributors workshopped our essays in Encountering the Sacred over the course of two women’s writing retreats – one in NYC and one in LA.
Our (finished) book–complete with discussion questions at the end of each chapter–would be great for women’s groups, churches, and classroom settings.
Encountering the Sacred has been featured in Red Tent Living and in the Women’s Alliance for Theology, Ethics, and Ritual (WATER)–their WATERtalk: Feminist Conversations in Religion and in their March 2019 newsletter as a recommended book. It has also been reviewed in Practical Theology, Reading Religion: A Publication of the American Academy of Religion, Theological Studies and elsewhere.
“The courageus women who tell their stories here give us wisdom for discerning spiritual truth in our lives in all their complexity. And they invite us to continue the movement to hold all women’s lives sacred.”
– Rita Nakashima Brock, Faith Voices for the Common Good
More Praise for
Encountering the Sacred
“Encountering the Sacred is an invitation not only to eavesdrop on the writer’s kitchen-table talk, but also to enter into these meaning-making, tradition-challenging, and body-honoring conversations about women’s lived expereinces….This book invites readers to practice Christianities as living faith traditions…[and] models doing theology with vulnerability and power for both theologically trained and lay audiences.”
“The chapters are brilliant, poignant, and beautifully written. Taken together, they offer a richly textured portrait of feminist theology as a framework that can hold–and help make sense of–all the different parts of life. For those who are familiar with, new to, or even suspicious of feminist theology, this book is a must read.”
“Encountering the Sacred is…a must-read for any person searching for life-giving and self-affirming feminist theological interpretations of the most intimate and deeply interpersonal and communal issues.”
“Encountering the Sacred rethinks feminism(s) for our current times….This text invites Church and society to listen deeply to the voices of feminist theological and religious scholars. They give us a blueprint for social transformation.”
“Anyone who wants to know why feminist theology is (still) important, or what feminist theology can offer to the churches now and for the future, should read this book….Scriptural, liturgical and traditional resources are interwoven with personal stories offering multiple points of connections for the reader.”
